Ways to help

Teacher Mentor

OSS encourages volunteers who were teachers or curriculum specialists to consider becoming a mentor to a member of the faculty. OSS is fortunate to have professional teachers and AmeriCorps Volunteer Teachers; each staff member seeks to grow and be the best at their occupation. Support new AmeriCorps teachers; inspire professional teachers; help create lessons; grade homework; work on rubrics; research educational trends; help OSS align with standards of best practice.

Some girls speak Spanish as their native language so perhaps you could organize or join a conversation club, a chance to read books in Spanish. 12:30 to 1:15PM every day or could be limited to Mondays and Fridays.

The girls will focus on your messages as their Morning Speaker. Be ready for observations, questions, and shooting stars of approval. Dozens of South Coast (even West Coast!!) friends have spoken with our girls over the years. Know that OSS believes our friends can inspire the girls to think big, act responsibly and achieve greatness in their years ahead.

How you help Currently more than 120 volunteers give over 4,000 hours every year to be an academic coach, organize and lead a club activity, help in the library, greet visitors at the front desk, or mentor teachers or help with girls learning Spanish or Portuguese. The possibilities are endless-- we welcome your talents and ideas!
About us Our Sisters’ School opened in 2008 as a tuition-free, non-sectarian, independent school for girls from low-income families. In our 10th year, we continue to educate and inspire girls in grades 5 to 8 from the Greater New Bedford area to reach their full potential in a safe, supportive and challenging environment. The School’s name honors New Bedford’s storied history of women, called Sister Sailors, who joined whaling expeditions in the early 1800s. Experiential and in-depth learning activities in our classes help our students develop excellent skills for success in high school, college and beyond.
