Our mission

Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services promotes the right of all individuals to live with dignity, in the setting of their choice by offering older people, younger people with disabilities, and caregivers the information, services and support needed to make choices which enhance health, well being and independence.
Opportunities

Help Older Adults Pay Bills and Stay Housed

Make a difference in the life of an older neighbor in Somerville or Cambridge by enabling them to continue to live independently — become a bill payer volunteer!

Assist one of our clients by making sure the bills are paid on time. This volunteer position is primarily responsible for helping a client organize and pay bills, balance the check book, and develop a household budget so they can live within his/her means.  Regularly scheduled rent and utility payments enable people to continue living in their homes!

This is a great opportunity for those who enjoy helping older adults and have 2-4 hours per month to make home visits.  Availability on weekdays during business hours is especially helpful.

Time: Two to four hours a month.  We’re looking for volunteers who plan to stay with the program for at least a year.

Deliver Groceries to Older Adults in Somerville and Cambridge!

Deliver groceries once a month to older adults in our Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP)!  We partner with the Greater Boston Food Bank, which delivers bagged groceries to the Arts at the Armory in Somerville. From there, you would drive your personal car to deliver them to older adults on a route.  The grocery boxes are heavy, so this role is not ideal for someone who has a history of back pain or restrictions on lifting.

This event is the 1st Tuesday of each month, starting between 8 am and 10 am, and the time commitment is from 2 to 3 hours.

URGENT - Connect Advocate Volunteers Needed!

Help an older adult with a behavioral health condition access medical care and cope with health-related stress and anxiety. Volunteers provide emotional and practical support including assistance with scheduling and getting to appointments, taking notes to retain information as needed, and scheduling follow-up appointments.  We also ask volunteers to submit notes to our Program Manager every month.

Volunteers need some weekday availability to attend appointments, which average 3 hours in length (including transportation to/from). There are typically 1 or 2 appointments per month.

Medical Advocate

As a volunteer in the Medical Advocate Program, you will be matched with a senior who needs help navigating their medical care. You will become familiar with their health concerns and accompany them to doctor’s visits. Training is provided. Skills: Sensitivity to older adults, reliability, good communication abilities.

Caring Neighbor

If you have a few hours each month to help a neighbor, you can: Run an errand for them while you’re running your own; Take them for a walk or read them the newspaper; Shovel their sidewalk in the winter time. Skills: Being a good neighbor!

About us

Since 1972, Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services (SCES) has been the area’s aging information and service center. SCES helps older people and people living with disabilities remain safe and independent in their own homes by providing a wide range of supportive services, as well as information and advice. SCES services are available to older residents of Cambridge and Somerville, as well as their caregivers. Some services are open to adults with disabilities who are age 16 or older, and to residents of the Greater Boston area.
